Siang Hee Restaurant 双喜菜馆

Read about this place from a few blogs recently, and happen one of our friends suggested checking out this place when we had our dinner at Mellben last week, so decided to pop by today since there seems to be some hype growing at this place.

When we came here at 6+, the place was pretty quiet, with only a few tables occupied. Not sure if it was due to the rain, or we were early, but even when we left, the place wasn't that full as well.

Service seems to be absent from this laid back coffee shop. We've to go to the stall to make our orders (though most zi char will have someone come to ya table to take your orders), and same goes for the drinks. When I was at the drink stall, one of them seems to be even taking a nap there, while another 3 person sitting at a table beside (I believe are helpers) just sit there and give me a blank look.

Ok... doesn't sound like a very good start. Anyway, we ordered some of the recommended dishes like the deep fried pork knuckles, marmite pork ribs, pumpkin butter prawns, their famous toufu and the "four seasons" bean. Total 5 dishes, and 6 plate of rice, total damage was $62, which works out to around $10 per person.

The food here turns out to be pretty good. The dishes are unique compared to the typical zi char places. My personal favourite is the pumpkin butter prawns. I found the pumpkin sauce pretty good! The marmite pork ribs was tender and taste really nice as well, though I'm really hard pressed if there's really any marmite used for the dish, as I dun think I taste any marmite in the pork ribs though. The pork knuckles was good, especially the sauce. However, if the meat would be more juicy instead of dry would be better. It taste like roasted pork actually :). The rest like the toufu and beans were equally good.

Overall, we all found the food here pretty reasonably priced, and food definitely deserves a 3.5 star, though I would prefer the dishes to be piping hot when served though (could be due to the cooler weather due to the rain?). The lacking in service is made by up the pretty decent and reasonably priced food here.

So do check it out soon before too many people get to know about this and make this place really crowded next time :).

wow! didn't know this place been around for 20 years! Well, cos when we were there, we were sort of expecting someone to come and take our orders for our food like most zi char place. So after sitting there for a couple of minutes, and it seems like nothing is happening, we went over to the stall to get our orders taken.

Been eating at this store since 20 years back when they are at St George's...best fish soup noodle & fry rice at only $2 then..follow them to Zion & the lady boss (Main cook) invented many dishes..But I still stick with her Hor Hiang (with salted egg, can't get it any othere place), Prawn Based chicken and their new dish of Pork knuckles is good but of course cannot compared to German one...but definitely value for $$$...cannot expect much service since they are a store there & don't own the coffee shop :))

I've never been to Chinatown food centre or Albert Street Temporary food centre so can't compare. Yup, it's "song fish head" steam with tau see style, and I love the pork lard on it, very crispy. ^o^

Overall plus the cendol. I like the sauce but the crushed peanuts spoiled it and the fried stuffs too plain.
