Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill

Posted by CyberTron on Jan 30, 2010 1:57PM
The Traders Hotel is actually located at KLCC, however, the car park entrance to the Trader's Hotel (shared with KLCC) is actually a bit hard to find though, where you have to enter through the back of KLCC.

Gobo Upstairs at level 6 of Traders hotel is actually split into the lounge and grill portion. The lounge area actually has a better view of the city compared to the grill area. I'm not sure if you can sit at the lounge area if you planning for the grill menu.

Anyway, after the Japanese lunch buffet we had earlier at Gonbei, we were actually not that hungry when we were there, so we did not go crazy with the ordering. I ordered a medium rare Kobe striploin (200g, RM120), while my friend ordered a Kobe beef cheek (RM50). If not wrong, both are supposed to be Wagyu, if I remember correctly. Sides are ordered separately at RM14 each, and we ordered a cod mashed and baby french bean. Coke was at RM15. Total bill came up to RM271.40.

Food wise, they are pretty good. The steak was done just nice, pinkish inside and not too bloody. The beef cheek was something new that I've never tried before. The texture kind of like beef stew, and is actually very very tender. As for the sides, the cod mash is actually mash potato with cod fish flakes mixed in it. Pretty nice though for one person, might be too much though. The baby french bean was my favourite, as it is cooked with cheese.

Overall, the price here is probably on the upmarket side though food and service is pretty good. The view was not that great at the grill area, but ambience is quite good. :)

Fine Japanese Cuisine Eat All You Can

Saw a banner outside Starhill Gallery that the restaurant supposed to ship in fresh seafood from Japan Tsukiji market daily. Decided to check out this place for their Saturday lunch buffet which goes for RM75++.

When we were there, the place was pretty quiet though. Seems like only 2 - 3 tables where occupied. The lunch buffet is actually ala carte style, so you order from the menu. The variety is pretty good, and covers everything from sashimi to tempura, and dessert as well.

Food quality and taste wise is generally pretty good. Something I've not tried before is this white tuna sashimi. Outside it looks like butter fish, but have the taste of tuna. In fact, I find the tuna taste stronger than the typical red ones. We actually ordered the white tuna 3 times :). There is also a complimentary serving of abalone sashimi as well, which was pretty good as well. The only one that I find was not as good was this pin head mushroom or something, which I find it was a little salty. Else the rest like the lamb, and beef roll etc were pretty nice. For desserts, we ordered fruits, glutinous rice balls with red bean, ice cream and pan cakes.

Overall, the food here is pretty good. This is the first japanese buffet I've tried in KL and it was definitely pretty good. Was told the dinner buffet at RM88++ supposedly comes with extra oysters and supposedly free flow abalone if we did not hear wrong. :)

    Suckling pig Spanish style

Was searching online for a restaurant in KL that serves nice pork, and came across this restaurant. The restaurant was not hard to find as it is listed on our gps. The area is actually quite crowded with quite a few restaurant and pubs along the road. Parking might be a problem though the restaurant offers valet parking for RM10.

We pretty much decided we are going for the suckling pig for our main course before we were there. We ordered half a suckling pig (RM118) and wanted to another another main course to share, but was advise by the waitress the suckling pig would be enough, probably an extra appetizer or side. We decided to be conservative and just stick with the suckling pig. The half suckling pig also comes together with 2 soup, a salad and potato wedges. Nothing exceptional for the soup and sides.

The main highlight of the day was of course the suckling pig. For a start, the half suckling pig was served uncut. The waiter then proceed to explain to us how to cut the pig. Basically, we were given a normal plate (nothing special), and he will make one cut on the pig at the neck portion, while I will make 3 cuts at the body. Oh, and before we cut, we are supposed to knock the plate 3 times on the table. I'm actually quite surprised how easy the plate cut through the pig cleanly and did not create a big mess. :) Yes, that's the first time in my life chopping a suckling pig :). After that, the waiter brought out a wooden bucket with a stone inside and we're told to drop the plate we just used to chop the pig at somewhere between waist and chest level into the bucket to break the plate for good luck. :) After the whole process, the sucking pig was brought back to the kitchen where the chef makes a few more cut before it was served.

So how does the spanish suckling pig taste compared to the typical chinese version we usually have at chinese wedding? Well, taste wise, they are pretty similar, though there is more spice used for the chinese version, while this was more blend, but was actually quite nice as you can taste the pork better :). The pig was also more meaty and the skin is slightly thicker but very crispy compared to the chinese version. However, for those healthy food lovers might want to give this dish a miss given the sinful amount of fats in the pig, which I love! :)

Overall, we enjoyed the suckling pig very much and looking at the photos again makes me want to go back again soon. So for all pork lovers, do check out this place if you have not :) Awesomely sinful :)

    Soon Fatt Roast Duck

Posted by CyberTron on Dec 14, 2009 11:32AM
After I told my friend I went to Meng Kee char siew near Jalan Alor, which was crowded, my friend told me to try out the glass char siew at this place.

Actually, this place seems to be more famous for their duck than their char siew, given they have quite a few different style of duck, from peking duck to sesame duck. From the newspaper cutting at the stall, the chef seems to be from some big restaurant before.

We ordered a mix of char siew and roast duck. The glass char siew was not bad, got a sweet honey taste. However, it does not have the crispiness of those at Meng Kee, which I prefer. The roast duck wasn't very fantastic, probably just above average.

As it was awhile since I had my lunch there, did not quite remember how much it cost, but if I recall correctly, it wasn't that cheap as well.

Overall, above average char siew and duck here, but probably not the best.

In my trips to KL, this is one of the restaurant that I've been back more than once. This restaurant boast the 34 different ways to prepare your crab, ranging from butter to curry.

The last trip I brought a couple of my friends from overseas over, and the 7 of us had a total of 10 crabs, cooked in 5 different styles. We ordered the butter, kam hiong, steam, chilli and marmite. Though there are lots of choices, and they all taste pretty good, they are probably not the best. I personally like the butter most especially eaten with the bun, probably followed by the marmite next. The kam hiong was nice and special too, something I've not tried before in Singapore. One of my friends actually like the bun, and we actually ordered 4 bun to go with our crab. The potato leaf vege is also not bad too.

Overall, the food here is pretty good, and price wise is reasonable and does not burn a hole in ya wallet. Would recommend this place if you looking for crabs to eat in KL.

I always wanted to write a review on this, the char siew wantan mee of Restoran Meng Shiang @ Yulek.

The dry and lean looking char siew might not turn your appetite on instantly, but trust me, you must give it a try!

And, you need a lots, ahemm, I mean A LOTS of patience to wait for your char siew mee to be served....

They do serve roasted pork (siu yok) and grilled spare ribs, but my advice is FOCUS on the char siew and the springy noodles!

Is diagonally opposite Jogoya. Supposedly the quality is better than Jogoya. Price wise, if we convert currency, then Malaysia is cheaper. If we do not convert currency, then Singapore is cheaper. Generally, a japanese buffet in Siingapore is around SGD30+ range.

hi! The bak kut teh at this place is Klang style. If you refering to the peppery style Bak Kut Teh you typically find in Singapore, then this is not the place for you. For the peppery style one, the famous ones are probably ones are Balestier Road or the one at Tanjong Pagar complex. For me, I usually just go to Song Fa at Rochor which is decent for me, and more convenient as well.
