Restoran Makanan Laut Lau Heong

Posted by CyberTron on Sep 01, 2010 9:58PM
Actually was't planning to have dinner. Was actually looking for this Sentul hokkien mee, but could not find it. I think it is no longer there, so decided to pop by here for dinner, which is nearby instead. My friend tried this place before and she said the food was good, but the wait can be very long. Anyway, we were quite early that day, so was not that bad.

After checking online for recommended dish to order, we order the pork knuckle (RM20), sweet potato leave(RM7), sotong prawn (RM16) and fried chicken wing (RM9 - 4pcs). Total bill came up to RM56.40, which was pretty cheap.

For a start, the pork knuckle seems to have a sauce that looks like curry, but is actually not spicy. The sauce is actually quite a good complement to the pork knuckle, as it sort of "lighten" the whole dish, and you dun get an overdose of pork and fats after eating it. The sotong prawn was not bad, and the gravy was a bit special. Overall, this dish was not that exceptional though. The chicken wing was not bad either.

Overall, I think the food here is pretty good and value for money. However, the crowd might turn off by the long wait though. So if you planning to check out this place, try to go there early.

    Dynasty Dragon Seafood Restaurant

Posted by CyberTron on Aug 14, 2010 12:56AM
Saw an advertisement from this restaurant chain having a promotion for their crab going for RM19.80/kg, decided to pop by to try it since we were planning to have crab for dinner this week.

There's a little catch for the crab promotion. You need to order one extra dish for every kg of crab you order, and limited to 3kg per table. There's only 3 style of cooking for the crab as well. One is gum heong, the other 2 is ginger spring onion and tomato sauce.

Given these 3 choice, we went with the more obvious one, which is the gum heong.

We got 3 crabs for 1kg, priced at RM19.80, which was a pretty good deal. Taste was not bad as well. We also ordered a promotion dish of the day. For thursday, it is indonesian prawn, which is like a claypot curry prawn (RM23.80). This is one of my favourite dish for the meal there. We also order a dong po rou (RM38), which wasn't to my taste, as it was a modified version of dong po rou. It does came with quite a big chunk of pork belly though. We also order a plate of yin yang noodle (RM16). This is pretty good too. We were considering whether to order the ee-fu noodle or this, and the waitress recommended this to us. I think it was a pretty good choice.

Overall damage was RM122.60, which was pretty good. We had order so much food that we had to pack our dong po rou. I think the food here is pretty decent, and price wise, with all the promotions, make it pretty good value for money too.

PS. This is located next to the cinema on level 3 in Times Square.

    Sea Terrace

Went to Malacca over the weekend with a couple of friends, and this is our first dinner in Malacca. As one of the friends wanted to go to the Portugese Settlement, we decided to have our seafood dinner at this place. This reminds me a little like the seafood restaurants stretch along East Coast back in Singapore, except these are much smaller. There are a couple of stalls selling similar seafood stuff, and was told this stall is one of the better ones (can see from the number of customers at this compare to the other few beside).

We ordered 2 different style of crab. One is sweet and sour, while the other is pepper. The supposedly most famous dish here is the BBQ fish though. Other than that, we also ordered the usual kang kong, chicken wings, and some other dishes. For the crabs, I prefer the pepper one. It is not like the pepper crab we typically find in Singapore. The crab is sort of baked with pepper, so you do not get any pepper gravy with the crab. However, you can taste the freshness of the crab meat though. As for the BBQ fish, I find the fish was slightly overdone though. I prefer my fish to be tender and juicy though.

Overall, the price at this place is reasonable (typical of Malaysian price), but the food is just average. Did not find the food that exception or any particular dish that stands out that really eager to go back for more actually.

    Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill

Posted by CyberTron on Jan 30, 2010 1:57PM
The Traders Hotel is actually located at KLCC, however, the car park entrance to the Trader's Hotel (shared with KLCC) is actually a bit hard to find though, where you have to enter through the back of KLCC.

Gobo Upstairs at level 6 of Traders hotel is actually split into the lounge and grill portion. The lounge area actually has a better view of the city compared to the grill area. I'm not sure if you can sit at the lounge area if you planning for the grill menu.

Anyway, after the Japanese lunch buffet we had earlier at Gonbei, we were actually not that hungry when we were there, so we did not go crazy with the ordering. I ordered a medium rare Kobe striploin (200g, RM120), while my friend ordered a Kobe beef cheek (RM50). If not wrong, both are supposed to be Wagyu, if I remember correctly. Sides are ordered separately at RM14 each, and we ordered a cod mashed and baby french bean. Coke was at RM15. Total bill came up to RM271.40.

Food wise, they are pretty good. The steak was done just nice, pinkish inside and not too bloody. The beef cheek was something new that I've never tried before. The texture kind of like beef stew, and is actually very very tender. As for the sides, the cod mash is actually mash potato with cod fish flakes mixed in it. Pretty nice though for one person, might be too much though. The baby french bean was my favourite, as it is cooked with cheese.

Overall, the price here is probably on the upmarket side though food and service is pretty good. The view was not that great at the grill area, but ambience is quite good. :)

Fine Japanese Cuisine Eat All You Can

Saw a banner outside Starhill Gallery that the restaurant supposed to ship in fresh seafood from Japan Tsukiji market daily. Decided to check out this place for their Saturday lunch buffet which goes for RM75++.

When we were there, the place was pretty quiet though. Seems like only 2 - 3 tables where occupied. The lunch buffet is actually ala carte style, so you order from the menu. The variety is pretty good, and covers everything from sashimi to tempura, and dessert as well.

Food quality and taste wise is generally pretty good. Something I've not tried before is this white tuna sashimi. Outside it looks like butter fish, but have the taste of tuna. In fact, I find the tuna taste stronger than the typical red ones. We actually ordered the white tuna 3 times :). There is also a complimentary serving of abalone sashimi as well, which was pretty good as well. The only one that I find was not as good was this pin head mushroom or something, which I find it was a little salty. Else the rest like the lamb, and beef roll etc were pretty nice. For desserts, we ordered fruits, glutinous rice balls with red bean, ice cream and pan cakes.

Overall, the food here is pretty good. This is the first japanese buffet I've tried in KL and it was definitely pretty good. Was told the dinner buffet at RM88++ supposedly comes with extra oysters and supposedly free flow abalone if we did not hear wrong. :)

    Suckling pig Spanish style

Was searching online for a restaurant in KL that serves nice pork, and came across this restaurant. The restaurant was not hard to find as it is listed on our gps. The area is actually quite crowded with quite a few restaurant and pubs along the road. Parking might be a problem though the restaurant offers valet parking for RM10.

We pretty much decided we are going for the suckling pig for our main course before we were there. We ordered half a suckling pig (RM118) and wanted to another another main course to share, but was advise by the waitress the suckling pig would be enough, probably an extra appetizer or side. We decided to be conservative and just stick with the suckling pig. The half suckling pig also comes together with 2 soup, a salad and potato wedges. Nothing exceptional for the soup and sides.

The main highlight of the day was of course the suckling pig. For a start, the half suckling pig was served uncut. The waiter then proceed to explain to us how to cut the pig. Basically, we were given a normal plate (nothing special), and he will make one cut on the pig at the neck portion, while I will make 3 cuts at the body. Oh, and before we cut, we are supposed to knock the plate 3 times on the table. I'm actually quite surprised how easy the plate cut through the pig cleanly and did not create a big mess. :) Yes, that's the first time in my life chopping a suckling pig :). After that, the waiter brought out a wooden bucket with a stone inside and we're told to drop the plate we just used to chop the pig at somewhere between waist and chest level into the bucket to break the plate for good luck. :) After the whole process, the sucking pig was brought back to the kitchen where the chef makes a few more cut before it was served.

So how does the spanish suckling pig taste compared to the typical chinese version we usually have at chinese wedding? Well, taste wise, they are pretty similar, though there is more spice used for the chinese version, while this was more blend, but was actually quite nice as you can taste the pork better :). The pig was also more meaty and the skin is slightly thicker but very crispy compared to the chinese version. However, for those healthy food lovers might want to give this dish a miss given the sinful amount of fats in the pig, which I love! :)

Overall, we enjoyed the suckling pig very much and looking at the photos again makes me want to go back again soon. So for all pork lovers, do check out this place if you have not :) Awesomely sinful :)

Grand Courts Vegetarian Restaurant @ Genting

Posted by CyberTron on Dec 16, 2009 12:02PM
During my last trip to Genting, while visting the Chin Swee Temple there, saw this newly opened vegetarian restaurant opened within the temple. As it was a vegetarian day for my friend, decided to grab our lunch here.

When we walked in the restaurant, the place was pretty crowded, and was told the wait will take around 45min after we manage to find a seat. Since we were not rushing, we decided to wait, and ordered the 2 person set (RM50) as per recommended so that it will be faster.

The wait turns out to be more than an hour, and during the wait, we've seen table that decide to cancel their orders, and customers were getting impatient and unhappy. To make it worse, the food was not served in a first come first served basis, and one who came later got their food much earlier.

Service was pretty bad probably because either the management is inexperience and coupled with the restaurant probably just newly opened with issues both inside and outside the kitchen. Waitress attitude were not very good as well, which gives you the feeling they do not really care about customer service.

However, service aside, the food turns out actually pretty good. In fact, I think it is one of the better vegetarian restaurant I've tried in KL though (not that I've tried many). The set comes with tea, vege, mock fish, tofu and a soup. My favourite is the vege and tofu which was very tasty (not sure is due to the long wait and cool weather).

Overall, if the iron out all the service issues, I would highly recommend this restaurant after the mushroom farm. For now, I might give them another chance the next time I go up, and if it is still the same, I'll probably strike it off the list. :)

    六記粥麵 Luk Kee Noodle

Posted by CyberTron on Dec 14, 2009 12:08PM
One our one day trip to Macau, decided to check out this place for our dinner. Though located within walking distance from the famous wall in Macau, we really had a hard time finally this place and nearly gave up. However, our perseverance finally paid off after we decided to take a break and ordered some herbal tea by a road side stall, and the auntie gladly pointed us the way.

The most famous item there is the har zai mee, which is translated to be shrimp noodle. My friend ordered the that, while I ordered similar, except with added wanton. When it was served, I was wonder where are the shrimp. Only that I realised the har zai is refering the the powdered dried shrimps that they sprinkled over the fried noodle. The noodle is very nice and coupled with the har zai is very tasty. However, my personal favourite is the intestine and the chicken feet. The chicken feet is very well braised that the sauce gets into the chicken feet making it really yummy. The intestine is tender and both were served piping hot.

I highly recommend this place if you are making a trip to Macau and check out the intestine and chicken feet! Is a must try!

    蓮香樓 Lin Heung Tea House

Posted by CyberTron on Dec 14, 2009 11:47AM
This dim sum place is recommended by one of the food guide we brought along during our trip to Hong Kong. This place seems like a traditional style dim sum and it seems to be there for the longest time.

We were there one late afternoon, which was a mistake, as we realised the dim sum stops around 3pm. Even that, the place was still pretty crowded when we were there. Like traditional dim sum style, the dim sum are still served in push cart. The "siew mai" are huge, and comes in lots more variety, like even pig stomach.

We only managed to try out only a handful of dim sum before we realised there will not be anymore dim sum. We also managed to see the waiters and waitresses gather at the table to have their late lunch of dim sum which is the same ones that were served to the customers too.

Overall, there's a very retro or nostalgia feeling at this restaurant, and one also feel homely at this place too. So if you guys want to check out this place, go early and be ready to share a table too!

    Soon Fatt Roast Duck

Posted by CyberTron on Dec 14, 2009 11:32AM
After I told my friend I went to Meng Kee char siew near Jalan Alor, which was crowded, my friend told me to try out the glass char siew at this place.

Actually, this place seems to be more famous for their duck than their char siew, given they have quite a few different style of duck, from peking duck to sesame duck. From the newspaper cutting at the stall, the chef seems to be from some big restaurant before.

We ordered a mix of char siew and roast duck. The glass char siew was not bad, got a sweet honey taste. However, it does not have the crispiness of those at Meng Kee, which I prefer. The roast duck wasn't very fantastic, probably just above average.

As it was awhile since I had my lunch there, did not quite remember how much it cost, but if I recall correctly, it wasn't that cheap as well.

Overall, above average char siew and duck here, but probably not the best.

My last 2 trips there this year was kinda disappointing as well. First time, somewhere near CNY, a lot of seafood was sold out, even the beer! Thought cos we were there late, so the next time we decided to get there earlier, and this time, the crab where sold out! Service was also very slow and not enuff people to serve the customers. Food wise, I think price is still ok, but I think the food is not longer as good as when it was less well known.... planning to try senibong next round...

hi! The bak kut teh at this place is Klang style. If you refering to the peppery style Bak Kut Teh you typically find in Singapore, then this is not the place for you. For the peppery style one, the famous ones are probably ones are Balestier Road or the one at Tanjong Pagar complex. For me, I usually just go to Song Fa at Rochor which is decent for me, and more convenient as well.
