Butter Pork Ribs (Medium) $12
When PChong first told me about Two Chef's Butter Pork Ribs, the dish I saw in my mind's eye was a couple of pork ribs swimming in golden oil. I bet it was good to eat but I felt my arteries clogging up just thinking about it.
So imagine my surprise when the Butter Pork Ribs come out covered with golden yellow dust and curry leaves! And even more delightfully surprised that it tasted so shiok!

California Pizza Kitchen Part II
Posted on Timeless Facade - Everything is a facade, only good food is a reality on Nov 20, 2008 11:01PM
Armed with a 1 for 1 voucher, I was back to visit my favourite pizza haunt in town, California Pizza Kitchen. To read about my previous positive visit to CPK, see here.
Interior
I opted for my usual booth seat at the basement level of this cosy family style eatery and being a Friday evening, people started streaming in to no end, resulting in a long queue forming up just outside of the pizza joint just to get a table.
Peking Duck Pizza
Probably one of the most unusual pizzas that I've come across and a signature pizza of CPK, the Peking duck pizza wasn't short on surprises. For starters, the crust's texture tasted like prata or Indian pancake - flaky and a tad chewy. Deep fried wanton skin toppings provided a nice crunch to the pizza. However I couldn't quite make out the taste of the duck slices although I could see them, all thanks to the rather strong peking duck dipping sauce that was drizzled all over. Overall the pizza tasted very much like peking duck wrapped up in a crepe. Most interesting!

Best Nasi Lemak, and then some...

with family for breakfast
This is a favourite of Edward and I when we go on our bicycle makan sessions. It remains a favourite with us, and Kin. I also brought my good friend Frank Muller - a German who lives in Dresden, to eat, and he too loved it.
The stall next door at Stall 1 also sells Nasi Lemak...and in days of yore there was only one queue...at Stall 2. However, recently business seemed to have picked up for Stall 1 as well, and when visited both queues were almost as long.

We all know the importance of the blood bank in Singapore and I am sure a lot of us wouldn't mind giving blood. But usually the thing that holds us back is the lack of opportunity as well as the fear of the needle.
Well, one good way of overcoming this is to rally a couple of friends together and do it as a team effort. Safety in numbers is still quite a strong survival instinct, so when you go with others, it is usually less daunting and a lot more fun.

Souled Out, Desa Sri Hartamas
Posted on After Giovanni on Nov 20, 2008 6:07PM
It’s not often that we bother with weekday evening traffic after work to catch up with friends but when we do manage, it makes me wonder why we don’t do it more often. One such unusual evening, we ended up at trusty, ever-dependable Souled Out in Desa Sri Hartamas. Idle chit-chat and beer poured, gulped and set aside, we got down to the serious task of making our individual selections from the extensive yet thoroughly familiar menu.
Beef ribs – one friend ordered this stupendous dish. I don’t eat beef but even so, I couldn’t help desiring some of that smoky bovine goodness. Mama Mia – another ordered the pizza topped with anchovies, beef bacon, black olives, garlic, tomatoes & cheese. Roasted chicken fajita – I was trying to eat light, having consumed a massive lunch. Love the combination of jalapeno and guacamole in this, and it’s the best portion for a snack. Leaves plenty of space for merry drinks! Chilli con carne – Massive serving of fresh corn chips, sour cream, avocado, minced meat and beans. This particular friend tends to stick very close to his tried-and-tested favourites; this never fails to bring on that big toothy grin. Mango prawn salad – This looked too pretty to not be photographed. There’s just something about succulent pink prawns nestled among fresh greens, don’t you think?Butter chicken – Souled Out has a more than decent Indian section in its menu and on this occasion, two in the group went for the big, value-for-money portions. One had Butter Chicken, the other Chicken Vindaloo (of which I took a bad photo of). They’re RM22 each but big enough to last you a couple of meals at least! There were also desserts, including one sexy looking Lava Cake but by then, we were all so caught up with the business of catching up that the cameras were elbowed out. I remember many happy hours spent here years ago but it got too crowded and too much of a hassle. Also, prices have gone up all around but if it’s consistency and hearty fare you’re after, there are not many ways you can go wrong here. Recommend coming here early Sunday evenings and trying the Sake-san pizza!

Ribs @ Oasis, Bandar Utama

It was drizzling last Sunday morning but it did not stop us from pushing through Rib’s door, with only one thing in our mind – PORK. Reviews like this & this are what lured us there, besides the close proximity to our neighbourhood.
In Ribs, there’s a whole slew of old magazines on the shelves. It was quite a bliss to sit at the outdoor terrace, have a cuppa and flip through the magazines.
The huge portion of roasted smokey bbq baby back pork ribs (RM 28.50) came with a separate serving of barbeque sauce. It was quite a letdown that the meat was a little dry and firm. The sauces were decent but I wish they had one that worked better with these ribs. However, KampungBoy (impressively) gnawed the bones clean.
The homemade juicy pork burger with cheese (RM 18.90) came amidst much anticipation. It screams simplicity - dressed with lettuces, tomatoes and a hearty slice of cheddar cheese, along with a side of fries. There isn’t a meat-eating man who can walk away from this delicious treat! The freshly ground meat patty is very juicy, so keep a napkin handy.
We finished with a molten chocolate cake (RM 10.50). Well, you can’t go wrong with chocolaty desserts but if you attempt to have the whole thing by yourself (just like me), you’ll be ended up with aching tooth. Imagine velvety rich chocolate cake with warm melted chocolate centre and large plops of chocolate sauce on top.
For mouth watering pork burgers, Ribs is the place to go. We wouldn’t mind returning here for more porkie goodies. I’m eyeing the ribs with oriental sauce!

Tokyo Eats Part 1: Daikokuya: Tendon in Asakusa

Tendon 1600 yen
Many kakis have requested to the pics of what I ate in my recent trip to Tokyo, so I have decided to post some of the highlights over the next few weeks. The reason that I have been resistant in posting my Tokyo pictures was because I thought that it might be a little frustrating to look at something delicious and not be able to easily just go down to that stall and eat it.
However, I know that Japanese food is currently very popular in Singapore and that a lot of our readers actually travel so this series of posts may be useful for everyone to reminesce about their own experiences in Tokyo as well as to recommend other great eats there.

I discovered Il Paradiso Café while driving east on 436 in Altamonte Springs one day last week. I was at the stop light at Montgomery and 436 and looked over in the Ashby Square Mall shopping area and noticed what seemed like a new Italian Restaurant in the location where an Italian deli use to be. I said to my self that I would have to stop in. The following week we made a visit.

The Polls show that Hainanese are the biggest Foodies
Posted on ieatishootipost Blogs Singapore Best Food on Nov 18, 2008 1:12AM
The results of the polls are out and it seems that of the different dialect groups, the Hainanese have the largest proportion of foodies!
Altogether, 2873 people voted and the breakdown is as follows:
In terms of numbers, the Hokkiens (26.9%) have a narrow lead over the Teochews (24.3%), followed closely by the Cantonese (18.8%) with a smaller population of Hakka (8.9%) and Hainanese (11.4%).
However, this does not really tell us whether being of a certain dialect group would make you more of a foodie. What I think would give us a more accurate picture is to compare the proportion of the voters to the proportion of dialect groups in Singapore in general.

Yuan Wei Deep Sea (Giant Grouper)

organized by Champagne and Mien3 for ieaters
When I got the notice for the makan session, I was intrigued by the Deep Sea Giant Grouper...and to have an entire restaurant devoted to this fish...interesting! Some research led me to discover that the giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) is the largest bony fish in the world, and can grow up to 2.7m and 600kg. It is found in the Austalian and Indo-Pacific waters.
The fish shown above is about 0.8m in length.
The fish is born female, and as they grow, they can turn into male if they reach about 1m in length. Each male usually have a dozen or so smaller females in his harem. From diving reports, the fish is known to be very inquisitive, and will come close to a diver to have a better look.
