Big D's Grill

When I read about this couple of weeks back, I was thinking how come 2 similar such similar stalls they sell "upmarket" western food in the hdb area at bedok south, somemore it is not that near bedok interchange area. Anyway, decided to come here to give this a try for dinner today, thinking if it is closed, I can go to the other one. For those who are not aware, previously at this place there's a stall called e.Black Board there which sells like sirloin steak at "hdb price", similar in concept to Botak Jones or Crazy Ang Mo.

When I was there, it turns out that this new kid on the block actually located where e.Black Board used to be. So I guess the latter is probably closed or moved. I actually hesitated and thought of eating somewhere else, but decided to just give this a try, mainly I dun really see that many people eating there on a sunday evening. Anyway, wanted to order the Australian ribeye, was told it was sold out. So ended up ordering the Australian sirlion. Wanted to order the soup of the day, and was told that was sold out too. Anyway, the steak alone was $24.

The steak did not take that long to be served. Started with the chips, which was pretty good, then tried the purplish salad, which turns out pretty good as well. Then came the steak. I ordered the medium rare, as I was told medium was just slightly pink. The steak came with this sauce that's served on a seprate dish. I can't make out what it was until I tasted out, which turns out to be made from mushroom. The sauce was yummy and definitely not your usual mushroom sauce you get for your steak elsewhere. The doneness of the steak was pretty good, only thing I find the steak was not as tender as I like it to be though. Seems to have some problems getting my fork stick into the steak sometimes. Overall, I think the steak here deserves a 3.5 star.

However, I'm still not used to the idea of eating a steak in a hdb coffee shop for $24 though. To me, if I'm heading to a hdb coffee shop, I'm probably looking for a meal at $5 - 10 range. If I got $30 to spend for a meal, I probably hit the restaurant. Frankly, I would consider this a decent restaurant grade western food at hdb coffe shop but dun think it is hdb coffee shop pricing...

oh yes...for those planning to drive there, the multi story car park beside the food centre can be quite pack, so if you dun mind walking, there's actually another multi storey carpark further done, probably like 300-400m away.

I've never been to Chinatown food centre or Albert Street Temporary food centre so can't compare. Yup, it's "song fish head" steam with tau see style, and I love the pork lard on it, very crispy. ^o^

Overall plus the cendol. I like the sauce but the crushed peanuts spoiled it and the fried stuffs too plain.

Why the food rating is only 2 stars if it's nearly the best mee rebus you've tried?
