Baba Inn

Peranakan Food, anyone? Baba Inn

With its simple, unassuming and distinctly Peranakan decor, Baba Inn is THE place to go if you're sick of yuppie food and want someplace to relax and tuck into a piping hot homecooked meal.

I just love bringing food from the east right to your doorstep! Muahahahahaha!

So what should you try here? The chicken buah keluak comes soaked in a spicy and flavourful gravy, which you MUST drench your rice with.

Another favourite is the Nonya chap chye, which tastes better than the regular ones you find outside at zhu chao places. And their fat, juicy otak otak puts those you find at hawker stalls to shame.

Bakwan kepiting is a crab shell stuffed with minced meat, crab, crunchy water chestnuts and I dunno what else, then is served piping hot in a clear broth and topped with bamboo shoots.

Their curry fishhead is extremely addictive. It set my mouth on fire, and I was tearing and consuming obscene amounts of water, but like a true masochist, I couldn't stop torturing my tastebuds because it was so yummy.

My last 2 trips there this year was kinda disappointing as well. First time, somewhere near CNY, a lot of seafood was sold out, even the beer! Thought cos we were there late, so the next time we decided to get there earlier, and this time, the crab where sold out! Service was also very slow and not enuff people to serve the customers. Food wise, I think price is still ok, but I think the food is not longer as good as when it was less well known.... planning to try senibong next round...

Have not been to Jogoya before, but I've been to the Gonbei opposite. Priced similarly to Jogoya if not wrong, and I thought the service and food was pretty good.

I went with 7 adults and 1 kid, we spent less than $120. I would safely hazard a guess of $18 - $25 per person, depending on how hungry you get. Real value for money for quality food.

Is diagonally opposite Jogoya. Supposedly the quality is better than Jogoya. Price wise, if we convert currency, then Malaysia is cheaper. If we do not convert currency, then Singapore is cheaper. Generally, a japanese buffet in Siingapore is around SGD30+ range.
